How much chicken pie per person?
Allow a quarter to a sixth of a standard 23cm pie per person: it serves 4 as a generous main and 6 with substantial sides. That works out at roughly 250 to 350g of finished pie each, or about 150g of cooked chicken and vegetables inside the pastry per portion.

Portions from a standard pie
The standard UK pie dish is 23cm across, and a main-course chicken pie in that dish feeds 4 to 6 people. Serve quarters when the pie is the whole meal with only a light salad, and sixths when there is mash, greens and gravy alongside.
For individual pies, 300 to 400g of assembled pie per person is a satisfying single serving. Hand pies are smaller, so plan on two per adult as a main.
Depth matters as much as diameter when counting portions. A standard dish 4 to 5cm deep gives the figures above, while a shallow enamel plate pie of the same width feeds one or two fewer. For unusual dishes, work from capacity instead: fill the empty dish with water, measure the volume, and allow roughly 300ml of assembled pie per person as a main course.
Working it out by ingredients
If you are building a recipe from scratch, portion the filling first and let the pastry follow. These figures assume the pie is the centre of the plate.
| Component | Per person | For a 23cm pie serving 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked chicken | 100 to 125g | 500 to 600g |
| Vegetables | 75 to 100g | 400 to 500g |
| Sauce | 100ml | 500ml |
| Pastry | 75 to 100g | 400 to 500g |
Adjusting for the occasion
Appetites vary more than tables admit. Teenagers and anyone who has been outdoors all day will treat a quarter pie as a starting bid, while a lunch crowd eating at desks wants smaller slices.
Err generous when the pie is the only hot dish, and tighter when it sits in a spread. Leftover chicken pie keeps for 3 to 4 days in the fridge and reheats well at 180C (350F), so overshooting is rarely wasted effort. Undershooting, on the other hand, is remembered.
